Bart, hi. I have varieties of 2A3 - mono & bi, RCA, Sylvania, Tung-Sol, and so forth. My 2A3 amp is fixed bias w polyprop & oil and Black Gate.
It is a 56 into a 56 into 2A3. All filaments are well filtered DC. The output transformers are by Mr Eliano at Electra-Print Audio. The 5930 has always been something of a rara avis. This was just as true 25 years ago as it is today. Often rarity is transposed with "best" - as in best sound. This is a psychological and socialogical phenomenon. The grass is always greener, etc. If you want an excellent 2A3 consider the currently manufactured JJ 2A3-40. Though having the plate structure of the 40W 300B if you run this tube as a 2A3 (B+ circa 300V @ 60mA) you will be rewarded with a startlingly good presentation. The price is also nice. I got mine through Antique Electronic Supply, but probably other venders have them. JJ seems to be building righteous tubes based on my experience with the JJ 300B and 2A3-40. Happy listening.
