RE: Don't forget the chocolate frosting! - Plus a silly thermodynamic query

Cryo and heat treatment are not the antithesis it may appear to be. They are simply addressing different aspects of tube construction and the nature of tube operation.

I've been experimenting with baking for over a decade, perhaps close to two decades now. I've done experimenting with cryogenic treatment (very crude ones, admittedly) for about 4 years.

Cryo'ed tubes are very much quieter, but it seems to me that in my initial experiments, the cryo seems to limit dynamics and also reduce high frequency extension although the frequency response on Yugoslavian tubes seems to have become more even. I was not happy with a simple cryo'ed tube. I then experimented with a combination of baking and cryo'ing the tubes. That was sonically much better, regaining some of the lost dynamics and frequency response, but I am still not 100% happy with the results. I have been relatively mum on this subject because I do not possess true cryogenic equipment, so my conclusions may be incorrect (and indeed, those who employ a good cryogenic treatment with definite holding times will disagree more).

I eventually purchased a used laboratory refrigerator capable of -100 C. Even at that relatively high temperature, I can hear the effects of a true cryogenically treated tube (provided by others, of course).

Of course, YMMV
