Fender, hi. Seriously thinking about a DIY tube project? Tubes become less expensive variables. The output transformer would rank higher on my list. Ditto the power supply. A SET may not have a high parts count but every part counts. As you progess the truth of this innocent sounding phrase will be revealed again and again. Still, there is no getting away from the output transformer. However, the comparison between new iron and old iron may be a false dichotomy. Nothing against vintage iron but there are some very nice currently made transformers - this is an understatement.
