Mark, hi. Obviously you have given this subject quite a lot of thought. I say, great. I think it's time to buy the General Electric Essential Characteristics handbook. Antique Electronic Supply in Tempe AZ did the photo offset reprinting (tubesandmore dot com). With this volume and a highlighter you can cruise through acres of tube data. If you have a "teach yourself" bent you will be able to mine data from this book to excellent effect. I would also try to get a copy of the Radiotron Designers Handbook and study. There are lots of other good texts to help you launch more deeply into the tube audio hobby. Tube rolling is much like changing the spark plugs in your car. It can only do so much. When you find out you can change a cheap polyester metalized capacitor to something better a whole new world is going to be open to you - a world of extended possibilities and a quality of sound that leaves most commercial electronics far far behind. This is a good time to get deeper into it as lots of tubey tech books have been reprinted (RCA TT-5 Transmitting Tubes under 5 kW !!)and now you have the internet. Take the plunge - the electrons are just fine.
