Re: EH6922 in CAT SL-1

I can't stand to stay out of this thread any longer. I used and still own the old CAT REF1. I never had a tube go bad in the about ten years I owned it. I currently own the CAT ULT MK2 for about three years. I have had no tube failures with this one either. I have done EXTENSIVE tube rolling in the CAT ULT MK2. I have taken the performance of the CAT to a level of performance that is so far removed from where it was with the stock tubes that you would never believe it was the same product. I would never consider using the Sovtek 6922 in anything ever. It has to be one of the worst tubes ever produced. The Amperex or Siemens 6922's are a huge improvement.
If you want the very best (and by a wide margin) you will pay big bucks for Amperex pinched waist 6922's. To add to the problem of using the PW Amperex 6922, many are microphonic and or noisy. The CAT is a very high gain design and a noisy tube will be unlistenable in it. The 12AX7 stock tube position is occupied by the EI. To call it a mediocre tube is generous. The best 12AX7 in this position is the Mazda silver plate 12AX7 (4 bar is slightly better than 2 bar). The best tube to use in this position is the Sylvania 5751 blackplate triple mica square getter. The AI M3 is hard on tubes (check the numerous threads here). The 6DJ8 sub that is durable in this pre is the 7DJ8. I have also rolled all (that I am aware of) 7DJ8's in the CAT. They are very good particularly for the money. The best of the bunch is the Philips A frame. The 7DJ8 does somethings better than the 6922's (huge soundstage, great dynamics) but lack the refinement of the best 6922's (Amperex and Siemens). I have spent about 12,000 in the past year and a half on signal tubes and have tried most of them.
