Re: Need help with EA-2

Rachel, hi. From your description it appears the main power supply filters (electrolytic capacitors) have failed. These components smooth the DC in the power supply - and as an audio amplifier modulates its DC supply if they are not working properly the result is hum. Time to replace all electrolytic capacitors. If you plan to keep and enjoy them I would encourage you to begin the learning curve on the care and feeding of your amps. The more you know about their workings the better. Hum can also occur if AC gets coupled into audio circuits by induction, etc. Grounding issues come into play. Still and all what you describe sounds like bad electrolytic caps. Personally I think electrolytic caps are anathema to audio. There are so many much better choices. The only reason these things become universal was they are the cheapest alternative.
