Re: Berning EA-230 Tube Choice?

Fishfood, hi. This is a screen drive 6JN6 amp with tubes biased almost at cut off. The 6JN6 is a high purveyance tube designed for televison receivers. It is being used in the 230 as a Class B pseudo triode - elements tied to make it behave as a triode. Grid #1 is not used as the control grid; Grid #2, screen grid, is. I don't think "tube rolling" is going to matter much. The 6SN7 must be a 6SN7GTB as I recall due to demands placed on it. I rebuilt one with better couplers and Black Gates/Stealth diodes in power supply to see if improvements followed. They did although I am thinking it was the power supply changes that made the most difference. Some love this amp for electrostats. The tubes in the one you are thinking about buying may indeed be original. The 6JN6 are being used conservatively. This may be an understatement. I am using mine to drive sub woofers. It seems to be a match made in heaven - best and most natural low freq in my system I have heard, and I've tried many including transistor amps (boo! hiss!). The 230 whips solid state at 120 Hz crossover and below. Have you tried any SET on your Quads?
