Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

Re: Why KT77's, and 5814's over the stock jobs please

Mang, hi. Why? Easy. The remaining pool of 12AU7 and variants is huge. They are not horribly expensive. Why not dip into the pool of relatively cheap & made at the zenith of tube production tubes? I kind of think this is calibrating your ears with the original genuine article as well. Nothing against EH at all. I applaud what EH is doing. Regarding the KT-77 - a friend of mine loves tube amps and has more amps in his collection than a non-audio person would believe. He also works on them, mods, etc. He absolutely loves the JJ KT-77. There was a minor problem with them at first. The original base pins were made too small in diameter. I think this has been corrected. For this guy to rave about an output tube says a lot about the tube.

5814 is one of the industrial/military numbers for tubes made starting with the characteristics of 12AU7. Heater current differs slightly but should not be a problem. Likewise current through the tube. There were countless 5814 made, and unlike the 12AX7 and variants (5751 etc) prices have not risen to the stratosphere. In other words you can obtain them without a second mortgage.

I hope this fully answers your question.
