Re: Sylvania: Pins steel and gold

Bambi and Gregg, thanks for the responses. I knew that the gray plate 3m sg had gold pins (exclusively I think). From what Joe describes, it is not the sound I am looking for. I have two pairs
of the Sylvania 3m bp sg and I agree with Bambi and Joe that it is hands down the class of the 5751/12AX7 family. I have a large collection of 12AX7's that I will probably sell at some point. I was
concerned about using the 5751 in my CAT pre and amp because these products have a reputation for volatility. I have never tried the Siemens 3m ECC83 you mentioned but in my opinion, Joe was right about the 12AX7 family. They all, to different degrees, smear detail. This is what Joe refers to as lack of focus. The best I found were the Mazda silver plate 4 and 2 bar and the Raytheon long black plate square getter but even they smear detail slightly. The GE 5751 which Joe praises almost as highly as the Sylvania bests all the 12AX7's I have (more than I care to list here) but is not really in the same class as the Sylvania. Joe mentions that the Sylvania's
mids are exagerated (forward)in the soundstage but I disagree. I find the GE's mids to be recessed which makes the presentation much less satisfying than the Sylvanias. I'll have to pick up some Sylvania GB 6201's based on your recommendation Bambi. I have a pair of Manley 350's that use them. This is strictly a backup amp if my CAT (which is fantastic) blows up. Not many people have positive opinions about the 12AT7 family. Bambi, how do you think the 12AT7 family stacks up against the big three (12AU7, 12AX7/5751, and 6DJ8/6922/7308)? Joe must not think much of it (12AT7), he doesn't even mention them.

Bart
