Re: Help...MAC-275!

Frank, hi. Time to redo the power supply filters. I would replace all the electrolytic caps in the amp including the PS. You are not the owner of a boat anchor in any sense of the word. Just like a vintage car there are some things in it that must be renewed/replaced after the passage of time. Electrolytic caps have a lifetime. The ones in your amp have exceeded it. I will tell you a brief story. 20 some years ago I happened to find a McIntosh MC-225. I loved the sound of it. As I progressed into SET amps the 225 kind of got left behind. Not long ago I decided to rework this amp to satisfy my curiosity. I wanted to hear what the Unity Coupled circuit could yield under more ideal conditions. I redid the PS several times - the last with BlackGate. I redid all the couplers in the amp: Teflon/tin and MIT Polystyrene tin multicaps. Then I checked all resistors against specified. Most were way out of tolerance. Went with wirewound and precision carbon film. There are a few resistors in the circuit that must be matched to 1%. Finding how out of tolerance these were lead me to check all of them. In point of fact when I finished all this work the sonic results were so good I forgot about the expense of parts and hours on the bench. Now all resistors in it are 1%. Mikey Samra knows what I mean and may chime in on this. Conclusion: I only thought I knew how good my MC-225 was. You have a wonderful amplifier. Take the time to get it right and enjoy it for the rest of your life.
