Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

Re: Please help identify mystery tube tester. Pictures enclosed

Walden, hi. This tester looks to be the kind of machine that would be found in supermarkets, hardware stores, etc where people could bring in tubes to test. This kind of test it yourself machine exploited the general paranoia over taking anything thing into a repair place where parts plus labor was the rule and expecting honesty to prevail over greed. Plus it fit into the do it yourself spirit that was alive after WWII. It is designed to be customer used. The roll charts would go on an overbridge sometimes with a small fluorescent lamp towards the top. Because of the huge number of prewired sockets it was pretty easy for a person to use who would be bringing in a box of tubes. This kind of tester is far from ideal and especially so regarding power tubes. I have one of these beasts in the collection. I installed a black-light UV tube in the lamp housing which made many plastic parts and the meter (ink on scale) glow like fury. I wonder how many in audio now remember taking in tubes to test on one of these and watching the judgement needle go to good or replace or somewhere in between.
