Congrats on resurrecting this piece! I find the ST70 to be a great introduction to "the tube" sound. The ST70 gets quite a bit 'right' in its presentation and one should caution upgrades, as they have various degrees of performance. Having owned 3 of the ST70's, I preferred the bone stock versions with the A-470 output transformers.Next, look into a tube preamp (many say this is where tons of the magic is) ...I personally built the bottlehead forplay and modded it out to the extreme.
Good luck with your tube adventures but just remember, each modification is "different" not necessarally better. Many have gone the full route of mods to an ST70 to be shacked when actually compared to a bone stock one. YMMV
