Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

Voice of moderation,

well, you mention the ST70 and looks what happens. Used to be the Heathkit W5 and Citation 5 would get a similiar waterfall of comments, but the W5's have fallen off of many radar screens and the Citation 5, well, you know,... Anyway, the ST70 is many things to many people. We had a discussion about this a couple of days back on the vintage forum, so I will not repeat it here.

As others have pointed out, the St70 is definately improved with fresh power supply caps and bias circuitry. Probably allot of the diference you heard between your old MkIV's and your ST70 can be attributed to this. The amp will also sound better after replacing the out of spec resistors and putting in fresh coupling caps. Furthermore, the stock ST70 can be improved slightly if you follow the Joe Rosen suggestions posted years ago. Having done these myself, I think they are worthwhile. I should also point out that speaker matching is also pretty key here. I have no idea why, but this amp (actually I have MkIV's) sounded very different on different speakers (as in more variability than most of my amps).

As for the PAS, well there are some phono stage mods out there, that do improve performance a bit (miller capcitor on input grids, diode biasing 12AX7's, better caps,...), but I may lean towards Douglas's (7G) sugestions here. But beauty is in the eye of the beholder. And as you have seen there are lots of different eyes (and ears) around here.

Take care,

Rodney
