I very much agree. The 6AR6/6098 is very good sounding, and still quite available. One of these days I'll work on a better driver for the "guided missle" amp, but it does sound fairly nice and is rather simple.The audio world tends to avoid plate caps, and there are lots of inexpensive possiblities. I agree, the 807/1625 family are very good. The original Heathkit Williamson W1 is one of my favorite push-pull amps and uses 807's. 1625's are widely available for < $5 each - not bad for a vintage 6L6!
