I suppose I've gone over the top, I couldn't imagine trying to inventory my attic. Fortunately I can "usually" remember where most of the rarer stuff is. It's the common stuff I occasionally break down and purchase just because it's easier to spring for $2-3 than spend time hunting.If you're just trying to maintain a few pieces of gear, two spare sets should get most of us thru a lifetime of use. The supply of new production output types like EL34, EL84, 6L6 and 7591 is actually quite a bit better than it was a few years ago.
It's when you try and start matching pairs for PP amps that quantity pays off. Last year I was trying to match up pairs of 5881's for some Heathkit W3's. I went thru probably 50 used 5881's to make up 3 - 4 pairs that were reasonably well matched for physical appearance, GM and plate current.
