Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

Re: Question About Matched Quads

I would skip the NOS idea. Get some matched Ei Elites and you will avoid some serious headaches and expense, plus the fact that many NOS tubes have anomalies not testable on all but the finest test equipment; the music just wont sound "right" and you'll never track it down. Been down that road. Get some RAM labs tubes, or if you have $50o-$1000 handy many vintage tube dealers have the sophisticated equipment to get you good NOS tubes. Having a a Siemens 6922, or a Telefunken blessed by his holiness in Rome is immaterial if it isn't working right--- and with the preamp top screwed down you won't see the tube anyway. What I mean is that a carefully selected, properly funtioning modern or 1970s Soviet 6922 beats a messed up 1960s 6922 of any pedigree that is malfunctioning. If you have the cash for tested, selected, matched NOS, try Andy Bouwman at Vintage Tube Services, Kevin Deal at UpScale Audio, Raretubes, Jim McShane, Ram Labs, KCA, MachMat, audiotubes, tube-shop.com, the new tube company, Adelaide Valve Sales, Halfin S.A., Crowethorne tubes, Thomas Bruckner, Triode Electronics, or the Tube Store. Beware of a recently developed process that is extremely effective at seperating audiophiles from their money--- cryogenic treatment. I've heard tubes untreated and treated that tested the same, same vintage, same polished pins on both, matched current draw and Gm of the triode halves etc etc. If anything, it has a deleterious effect. The GBM.
