Re: Best 6922/7308s for BAT VK5i?

Djhymn is correct, the VK5i is very tough for some tubes. I just replaced the stock Sovtek 6922 with the USSR Reflector 6H23 EB, have burn-in 70 hrs. I also replaced the stock 5881 with Tungsol 5881. I find the 6H23 is better in following areas: clarity, open sound stage, and airiness. The TS performs better than the JAN Phillips 5881 and the stock 5881.

The VK 5i after retube is musical and performs better than before.
I am satisfied with the bass and mid range sound, however, the extreme high frequency sound is slightly lean.

One problem observed at the beginning of the burn-in period is the increase of radio frequnecy noise from the right channel when the Gain knob was turned counter clockwise (with the system idle). I asked VK for help. He told me this is due to mis-match of tubes. After the 10 hrs of burn-in, this problem disappeared.

The only problem remains is a low level hum (not white noise hiss) still in the right channel mid bass when the system is idle. I can hear this hum if I position my ear within 5 inches from the speaker. I tried all means that I know of to eliminate this hum w/o success. I have isolated the source of the hum, it is from the VK 5i. Is it possible the tubes can pick up some radio noise ? Any owners of the VK 5i have experienced the same problem ? I followed VK's suggestion by rotating the tubes, in some combination it gets worse. The best combination remains as is.

Note: the supplier told me that the 6H23 EB is the military version of the 6922. The ones that I purchased were cryogenic treated 1982 model.
