12ax7 and 12au7 tubes category recommendation

Tubes could be sonically classified in to the three general categories.

1. warm
2. neutral
3. analityc

It was a good idea also to define the sound category of the whole system if you estimate the whole system as warm try neutral to analytic tubes. In the case of analytic sounding system try combination of neutral to warm tube. Let me assume that you have two neutral tubes in your amp and your system still sound analytical. Then obvious choice for tubes in your CD was neutral front end 12ax7 and warm 12au7 or even both warm 12ax7 and 12au7. Downstream the signal path in neutral system the best combination was analytic-neutral and finally warm tube. Warm system need more neutral or analytical tubes while the situation was opposite in the case of analytic system.

At the end some tubes recommendation in no particular order.

12ax7 - warm
1. Brimar 50s-60s long black or grey plate 12ax7
2. Brimar 50s black plate 6057 (warm-neutral)
2. Mullard 50s long plate ecc83
3. Sylvania or RCA 50s long black plate
4. Valvo-Hamburg short plate ecc83 (warm-neutral)
5. CBS long grey plate 12ax7

12ax7 - neutral
1. Philips 50s long plate ecc83 (neutral-warm)
2. Lorenz 60s long plate ecc83
3. Philips 60s short plate ecc83
4. RCA short or CBS long gray plate 7025 (neutral-analytic)
5. Valvo-Hamburg 50s long plate ecc83
6. Brimar 60s grey plate 6057 (neutral-warm)
7. Tungsram silver pin ecc83 (neutral-analytic)

12ax7 - analytic
1. Siemens triple or double mica e83cc (analytic-neutral)
2. Telefunken ecc803
3. Siemens long-50s(analytic-neutral)or short-60s plate ecc83
4. Tesla frame grid e83cc
5. Tesla long plate ecc803s

12au7 - warm
1. Brimar 50s long black plate 12au7
2. Brimar 50s black plate 6067
3. Mullard 50s long plate ecc82
4. Sylvania 50s long black plate 12au7
5. Valvo-Hamburg 50s long plate ecc82 (warm-neutral)
6. Ratyheon 50s black plate 5814 (warm-neutral)

12au7 - neutral
1. Siemens 60s silver plate ecc82 (neutral-analytic)
2. Telefunken ecc802s
3. Philips 50s long plate ecc82
4. Philips 60s short plate ecc82

12au7 - analytic
