I wasn't sure of the temp required to soften tar - good info. I've un-potted several wax filled transformer cases at 225-250 degrees F with good results.

Not that I take the potential toxicity of PCB's lightly, but they have a very high boiling point. What I was able to locate listed a boiling point of 340 degrees C. As long as the original transformer is mechanically intact I'd imagine it's pretty unlikely that any of the temps we're thinking of would cause a rupture if one were accidentially heated.
