Turns out that in a TV7 solid state replacements for the 83 work well. This is per Alan Douglas' book, personal experience and other forums. This is less true in other Hickok testers btw.Also the 5Y3 should not be replaced by solid state "equivalents" as they won't work properly in a TV7.
You can make an 83 replacement for under $1 - so buying one would be pretty silly imho. Take an old 4 pin base, put a pair of ten ohm resistors across the filament (fat) pins and solder a pair of 1N4007's between the other two pins and the "center tap" of the two 10 ohm resistors - make sure to orient the 1N4007's correctly. Much easier to build than to describe.
While the zener idea is cute, it's not necessary in the TV7's.
