Sorry I didn't respond sooner, I had some surgery as was offline.You shouldn't need anything close to that amount of capacitance to get the B+ quiet. I'd try 20 - 40uf/channel max.
An old octal base with a pair of 1N4007's would be useful for troubleshooting. Also a variac. Bring up the voltages slowly and see what's going on. B+ will be a bit higher, but for the short term troubleshooting it would be useful.
If all else fails, shoot a good resolution photo of the bottom of your amp and post it. Sometimes a "new set of eyes" can spot a wiring error quickly.
