Re: Best sounding Oil Filled caps? Gary K???

Sorry I dropped out of sight. I was off in New Orleans for a week. Good Jazz, lots of Blues, great food. The Hilton unfortunately only had internet service in the public areas of the lobby - rather inconvenient!

I've made use of Aerovox, Sprague and Cornell Dubilier oil caps in the past, great stuff - but I'm sure all are PCB filled. I test them for electrical leakage at rated voltage before using, and have never had one fail yet. I'm sure many are 40+ years old.

I've recently purchased some motor run ASC 100uf 370vac and 60uf/240vac caps on Ebay for very reasonable prices. The ESR of both is < .01 ohms on my meter and they have no measurable leakage at 600vdc. I plan to use them at around 1.4x AC ratings on DC. Both sound good on the breadboard.

The improvement of oil over electrolytics is dramatic, but I've not been able to convince myself that one brand is consistently better than another. I do think the older PCB stuff sounds a bit better, but it may be my imagination.

I am convinced that the best position for an oil cap is as the first cap in a CLCLC or LCLC filter. Really. This is not what I would have thought, but perhaps it is better able to handle the ripple.

John E. put in nicely in an email to me a few months back. Stuff in as many oil caps as you can get to fit, then add electrolytics until the hum is acceptable.
