Is the old potentiometer totally dead, or just scratchy?Many times if the potentiometer is just scratchy a good squirt of contact cleaner will work. If that doesn't help look at the coupling cap leading into the potentiometer (0.047uf IIRC). If this is leaky the DC across the potentiometer will increase the scratchyness dramatically.
As a last ditch effort a really tiny squirt of WD40 will sometimes restore a potentiometer to workable. Not a great solution, as I suspect in the long run it will get gummy - but if you're going to replace the potentiometer it's worth a try.
