Re: 394A thyratron as a rectifier questions...

Pete -

The person to speak with about 394A's is Dave Slagle, but I can pass along a bit of his advice. I've been considering them as well for a future project. I'm the voltage drop is 15-20v iirc.

Apparently the "grid as plate" connection is limited as to PIV more than current. About 300-0-300vac input is about max before flashover. Also you want the "birdcage" grid structure for this use or all of the purple glow is hidden :(

With "plate as plate" (or as they were designed) the PIV is around 1250v and current of around 1A is possible.

Apparently a 1K resistor between grid and plate allows a higher piv, but sounds pretty much identical as "plate as plate" hookup.

Lastly, I have test data worked out for a TV7 in both "grid as plate" and native (Thyratron) mode:

TV7/394A:
Thyratron 3.0v HS40000 Shunt 55 A4 cap to plate, will
strike with bias 30-40
Grid as plate 3.0v HS04000 (no connection to plate) Shunt 55 A7, good is > 60
