Re: WE407A Preamp...

Well, it's still my favorite linestage of the several dozen I've built or breadboarded. I think the 407A remains a true bargain in the WE tube lineup. I'm currently using it to drive a 6C45/211 single ended design somewhat similar to the amplifier on PAE's website. The combination is the best I've yet achieved.

I can't take much credit for the design. I made a few minor changes from a design I found on an Asian site to a 5670 based linestage. I did make up a PC board for the design (and still have one or two left). Construction is pretty trivial with a PC board.

B+ isn't all that critical, anything from 200-250v sounds about the same to my ears.

With a 7820 regulator circuit providing 20vdc for the filaments it is dead quiet. Occasional 407A's are microphonic, but most are quite consistent. They are pretty easy to turn up, and at most $10-15 from commercial sources. The Sylvania GB-407A's are also good sounding, but I tried some Erikson 407A that were horrid.

The 407B is the same tube btw, just more tightly screened.
