Do It Yourself (DIY) paradise for tube and SET project builders.

suck it and see

There is an old Australian phrase, 'suck it and see' which essentially means that you won't know until you try it yourself. Since I build amplifiers because I am curious and it's fun to do, I tried the LSES in a power amp.

I used:

great hulking hernia inducing industrial transformer (0.75 KVA)
UF4007
7 uf motor run
C-56U (0.035 H 0.79 ohms)
45 uf motor run
C-40X (o.32 H 10 ohms)
45 uf motor run
C-40X (o.32 H 10 ohms)
45 uf motor run

OK, the power supply produced the voltage I needed, the amp produced sound and for me, that is a good sign.

Being curious, I then used a couple of switches so that I could substitute a Hammond 193M (10 H, 62 ohm) for each of the C-40X inductors. It would take me only a few seconds to switch between inductors and although there is a difference in DCR between the two chokes, the difference in B+ was minor.

Interestingly, substituting one Hammond for one C-40X was quite noticeable as if a blanket had been placed over the sound. Substituting the other C-40X with yet another Hammond resulted in an eiderdown placed over the sound. Blanket and eiderdown are of course, precision terms.

I've done the simulations in PSUD like the rest of you, and followed the fly wheel discussions and yes, I am puzzled why this difference occurred.

My advice is to try it, see if you like it and then keep using it or not depending on what you hear. Fortunately, the chokes are relatively inexpensive. I've never tried LSES in a line stage so I can't advise you there.
