RE: How do you tell the difference between Novar and Noval when you order sockets?

Well, just to add to your confusion, the EL519 is a MAGNoval, not a Novar

As pointed out the Noval is the standard minature 9 pin socket, 12AX7 etc.

Novar is the large 9 pin socket, 9 pin compactron type. A common audio tube in this format is the 7868.

Magnoval's like the EL519, WE437A and others have thicker pins, but the same general pin location. You can force a Magnoval into a novar socket, but it won't hold novar's again tightly in the future. This becomes apparent with the current EH 7868's. The current production EH7868 tubes use Magnoval tooling. They will fit, but the sockets won't hold NOS tubes well afterwards.
