Chris, thanks for the help. I spoke with a tech in my area that I've worked with before and his feeling is if I can get it cheap enough it might be worth the gamble that it is fixable and not a boat anchor. With audio sometimes you win and sometimes you lose, I need to review my track record and see if I'm due for some good luck but my gut feeling is to move on to something else but there is also a little voice telling me to go ahead and go for it.
