Home Tube DIY Asylum

Do It Yourself (DIY) paradise for tube and SET project builders.

I see I need to qualify further.

Of course the wrong wire can make a difference. I'm not challanging that. For example I put an 18ga power cord on a lager sub woofer amp and then ask it to produce several hundred watts. Yes, if I replace that 18ga cord with a 12ga cord. it will sound much deeper and defined. But replacing that 12ga Home Depot cord with a $1200 cord IS NOT going to make a difference.

Likewise If I put 10 feet of highly capacitive shielded cable on a tube preamp with a megohm or more of output impedance, yes the highs are going to suffer. I need a low capacitance cable in this case. But it doesn't need to cost $1000 and won't sound any better then a $5 cable with the same capacitance specs.

Now as far as filtering goes, if I have a lot of noise on my AC line, yes a power cord with built in filtering be it ferrite cores or chokes will clean that up to an extent. But again that doesn't mean a power cord with a ferrite choke that costs $1000 is any better then one that costs $10.

Then we have these $150 plugs made from exotic metals. But you are sticking them into a 59 cent wall outlet in many cases. What good does all that exotic metal do when stuck into some dirty copper receptical. OK so they do make wall recepitcals from the same materials for hundreds of dollars and you can pay extra for cryogenic treatment and burn in. But you still have comodity electrical wire running back to the breaker panel. The breakers are nothing special and the panel is most likely using anodized aluminum as conductors.

You don't have to be an EE to see this makes absolutly no sense at all!
