RE: Illuminating...

lelandaudio, hi. Here is an unvarnished opinion. Building or re-working - I only use precision carbon film or wire wound unless availability forces something else. Some like tantalim R. That's OK. I know what works for me. Rating? Look at the self-noise figures rise exponentially with temperature. A 4X or even 6X multiplier is a good rule of thumb. Even where there is no appreciable current the higher wattage part often sounds best to these ears. Please take the time to find out about Mills wire wound. These are lovely parts. I guess another exception would be the Vishay Bulk Foil types - S102 etc. Some prefer the "nude" Vishay with no plastic body. Download Michael Percy's pdf catalog and keep it handy. Also get a copy of the Mouser or Allied catalogs. Perhaps DigiKey too. Take a highlighter and mark the R types - precision wire wound 1% and carbon film 1%. I have had good luck with non boutique parts. If you are talking cathode R for power tube go high wattage. I use a 150 W part for two 300B. I use a 50W part for my 45 amp and do it in two stages - 2XR -
750 Ohms and 750 Ohms. It has been an old trick (RCA among others, Allen Organ etc) - don't use what Ohms law says is OK - go way overboard in this area. In power WW I try to get copper alloy rather than chromium nickel wire. Makes a big dif. And, listen, listen, listen. Have Fun.
