convenience versus performance

Xaudiomanx, hi. Listen to what you are asking. I can get sub-par or even horrible sounding parts (R) cheaply and conveniently. Should I? Is this line of thinking in sync with trying to build a circuit for optimal sound? I don't think so. Leaving aside the topic of inductance perhaps the materials that make the resistive element will have an influence on the sound. My listening/building experience tells me they will. I like precision carbon film 1%. I like precision wire wound 1%. Some metal films are useful but pay attention to voltage ranges with these. High tension can cause metal migration. I have seen this type destruct in a most entertaining (pyrotechnic) but horrifying way. Some exotic types ( Vishay S102 bulk foil ) have their place. I tend to avoid the mixed oxide types ( Caddock ). Any one who builds/modifies will have their own resistor favorites that may run counter to what is mentioned above. That's OK. Their circuit is not my circuit. I can tell you that after sweating bullets on capacitor choices ( RC coupling ) I found as much or more effect by changing a resistor or two (same value, different construction) in the same circuit. Then, of course, one could make the big leap and avoid RC coupling altogether and use an IT. Also - if the circuit calls for 1/2 W I'll use 5W. If a cathode R can be 20 W I'll use a 50 W or higher. In one instance a cathode R calculated as 40 W wound up as 150 W WW. A cooler resistor is a happier resistor. Happy building and listening.
