Paul, hi. The VR tube photon phenomenon was related to me by an RCA engineer of high standing now long retired. He had access to the Princeton Labs and just about everything else. It was he who told me the story about VR tubes. Apparently it caused a little excitement at the time. I believe there may be a reference to this in the Radiotron Designers Handbook - this from memory. I know it is documented somewhere not too obscure. The same phenomenon can be found in NE-2 bulbs as used to light up switches. Some of these can be photon sensitive as well. I remember someone with a Hafler where the bulb would not fire unless and until he shined a flashlight beam on it. He was not looking for this effect but rather found it by accident. I'm not saying all NE-2 illuminated switches will demonstrate this effect but the one brought to my attention certainly did. The universe and what comprises the matter in it is much more mysterious than any of us would readily admit - not to get started on "false vacuum" and "dark energy" and so on.
