RE: RCA Amps--Information Appreciated

pen man, hi. NBC in Chicago was WMAQ located in the merchandise mart. Both TV and radio were "O&O" meaning owned and operated by The National Broadcasting company. It could very well be that your amps were one-offs made by RCA, parent company of NBC. The "MI-" identification should be affixed to the amps if they were cataloged items in RCA's equipment lineup. From the photos it would appear RCA eschewed electrolytic caps in the power supply for your amps. It would have been unusual to see all paper/oil caps and zero electrolytics. I have only seen this in amplifiers made by RCA for the US Navy, etc. How about the limiters? Do they have MI numbers? The O&O stations were often showplaces for networks where affiliate personel might come and see how it was done in the big city. I would try and locate any living WMAQ/NBC engineer and query. You might try some posts on some local windy city blogs. The RCA limiter/compressors are coveted by recording studios to this day. I have one placed in service about 1937 that is a wonder - huge separate 2A3 regulated power supply, all potted transformers and chokes, all nickel plated chassis and transformer/choke cans. Nothing like this will ever be produced again.
