RE: K40, Vitamin Q and 4ohm/8ohm observations

strictlyamateur, hi. Check to make sure the metal tube of the cap was not acting as an unintended conducter. Any part can fail given certain circumstances but the K-40Y I have tried have not. I just installed another two in a pair of mono blocks with parallel 300B SET. Total hours run is probably less than 100 but oh, the sound, the sound. Talk about transparent - let the music happen - it doesn't sound like electric music at all. There is a "you are there" quality that comes out one just doesn't hear all that often. I have been thinking about turning these amps into one triode stage interstage coupled to output grids but these RU K-40Y caps are so good sounding it is making be rethink RC coupling all over again. (Deja Vu) If you are not getting the music magic with these couplers there are other issues going on with the electronics. If the power supply has electrolytics you are already behind the 8-ball. On the other issue regarding speaker and amp matchup think about this. The loudspeaker presents a dynamic load to the amplifier. It shifts and rocks all over the place. It sends back EMF into the amp. It is anything but a simple R load. If your particular loudspeaker says it has an 8 Ohm impedance - this is putting a fixed value on a dynamic condition. If the reflected load swings lower than 8 Ohms a lot of the time your amp is wanting to see more of an 8 Ohm load but will not. It is always OK to go from a lower impedance into a higher impedance but it is always Not OK the other way around. By switching to your amps "4 Ohm" output the amp sees a higher reflected impedance. Based on what you are hearing the amp speaker combination likes it. Bottom line, you are getting better reproduction.
