RE: I'd better throw all my 83's away in that case

hi, everyone. Regarding the projection booth comments - when the light source for motion picture projection is carbon arc, the carbons are clad in metal. I think it was copper cladding. Also, the carbons contained impurities. When the arc is in operation it resembles a white hot flame in the gap. Metal cladding and any impurities in the carbons are vaporized. Carbon arc lamp housings had flexible metal hoses feeding chimneys that went to the roof top. It is entirely possible for metal vapor to escape the lamp housing and enter the surrounding air. The only thing carrying vapors out of the lamp housing was convection. The lamp housing had to be accessible to change carbons, etc. Often a lamp housing would be opened when the carbons were almost white hot. I am thinking unusual metallic film deposites in a carbon arc equipped projection booth might come from mechanisms described above. Also, mercury vapor rectifiers were the norm for radio transmitters for decades. Aside from breakage I have never heard chief engineers I know in 40 years talk about strange deposits on surfaces where mercury rectifiers were in service. I knew the guy who convinced the VOA to convert to silicon rectifier stacks instead of mercury vapor. Believe me, if he had something like "mercury migrates through the glass" to use as ammo in his demonstrations he would have used it. I would like to see something in the scientific literature about mercury migration through glass or the dangers of mercury vapor escaping from mercury vapor rectifier tubes. I have seen lead lined RF transmission lines with "danger, radio frequency radiation" posted on the outside in installations going back to the 40's. I wonder if that cel phone is stimulating carcinoma in my brain as the antenna is right next to my skull? That's a question the world will be/should be asking.
