Kenreau, hi. Print Michael Percy's PDF catalog and keep it handy. Also, cruise through Anthony's stuff at Handmade Electronics. Check R offerings in the sale categories as well as the regular stocked stuff.
Also, check Mouser Electronics and Newark Electronics on line. I find both Mouser and Newark print catalogs highly useful. You can also buy on ebay if you know what you are doing. Take a highlighter and reference all the 1% wire wound types and 1% precision carbon film series. A particularly good wire wound type is Mills - see Percy. I also like Percy non-inductive aluminum housed 50 W power resistors. I like to use precision 1% wire wound when I can get the value I need. If the circuit calls for 1/2W I use 1W or higher. A cooler R is a happier R. Also, with WW I try to stick with copper/nickel alloy rather than nickel/chrome. In one cathode circuit with 300B I am using a 150W R where a 60 would do. If grid stoppers are required I go for 1% carbon film. The Vishay S102 series (bulk foil) is also out of this world. In certain applications I have had excellent results with IRC WW. I avoid carbon comps (some love them) and metal oxide types. I avoid sending signal through metal films. I have heard metal film R ruin the sound of many an amp. These things tend to be highly unmusical used in a monoculture.
Also, the film tends migrate at higher voltages, not good. They also don't sound particularly good. There are a couple Vishay series of metal films I might use if I need a non-signal path R in a value I can't get in a WW or possibly a 1% precision carbon film. Have fun and keep your ears open. One can never know it all, but after some experience in comparing what various components sound like in circuit you'll feel better about R choices.
