Re: This isn't intended to hurt your feelings

Hi. John, Russ has given you some sage advice. That said, some builders/designers would tell you a carefully chosen carbon comp can't be beat for sonics. But,carbon comp can and do change value over time. I reworked a MC-225 with most R that had drifted way way off. I had reworked it previously with RelCap TRT and RTX couplers and new electrolytics. Then I reworked the power supply with Black Gates in the doubler and downstream filter. It was only until I had blueprinted the amp with new R (1 % or better) that it really came into its own. I favor 1% NI WW R where possible and precision carbon film as carbon resistor of choice. I didn't chase boutique parts per se. I find WW R to be least damaging to the sound. I avoid metal film and metal oxide R in signal path and elsewhere if possible. My 225 now has all the qualities that made me love its sound in the first place but now has a clarity, drive, and focus only hinted at in its stock 40 years untouched form. Do I recommend such a course of action on your amp? Sure - if you approach it with care and patience. Make it a learning experience and don't rush. The sound achieved will be your reward.
