10 K is best for modern, low impedance sources connected to an average (10K) solid state amp.
If you are going to use the passive preamp before a tube amp, 50 K is fine.
The higher resistance pots tend to pick up hum and RFI, they are recommended only if you have a high impedance tube phono stage (for example) as source.
As usual with all passive-resistive preamps, use a very short, low capacitance interconnect between preamp and power amp.
