Set your VOM to Volts AC, in a suitable voltage range (above 200 VAC in the USA, Above 300 V AC in Europe).
Connect any test lead (this is AC, therefore no polarity) to the ground socket in the wall outlet.
Measure both slots on the outlet with the remaining test lead.
On one slot you will see no more than 5 Volts, most likely a few milivolts, that's your Neutral, which should be connected to the wide blade/slot.
The other slot should measure 110 to 125 Volts AC, that's your HOT OR PHASE or LINE wire. Caution: the hot word comes from sizzling hot, as in fried fingertips!
Remember to disconnect the main circuit breaker in your AC panel before doing ANY AC work. Also, there is live AC before that circuit breaker at all times, do not touch it.
Good luck
Carlos
