Wow, didn't see anyone mention the Fender Champ/Vibrochamp.
SE 6V6 with a 5y3 recto and single input (12AX7 or similar - depending on your taste/application).
I've got a '69 sitting here in front of me that I use as my workhorse.
Very simple circuit, point to point wired so you can fix/tweak easily, and 5 watts through an 8 inch speaker that can go from clean to great crunch at full volume. You can buy one already to go (I'd recommend a '70s Silverface because they are less expensive than the Blackface models) or build one yourself from scratch or a kit (Ted Weber has nice kits).
Have fun with your project - you'll be happy with the results no matter which way you decide to go!
