I used a mixture of very small lead shot and masonry sand. The effect is to tighten the bass, so you sort of have to add a bit at a time and listen...tune them. Because yes, once it's in there it can be difficult to get it out. I've used this compound in JMR Orfeos, but also use it in Audio Note speaker stands.
