Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

Here is a description of the Leak 2060 sound:

Since nobody answered the thread and there is little to no information on the actual sound of these speakers on the internet besides, "They have a warm and magical sound", I will update the archives with some comments about what they actually do so that the data exists. I bought them yesterday.

A perfect description of the speaker would be that they sound like a more refined, less peaky, Wharfedale W60, which is essential what it is. The sound is on the warm side and they don't do anything particularly horrible. Keep in mind, I'm coming from Quad ESL 57s, so this is high praise. The most remarkable attribute of the speaker is that the mid-driver is incredibly well-behaved. You won't find anything shrill, shouty, or peaky about it. Thus said, the mids lack body and ultimate finesse but we're talking about a 40 year old 4" driver. This mid has a dryer, less magical sound than the KEF B110, but it also doesn't get harsh and out of control like the B110 does. I cannot comment on the purple tweeter as one of them was blown and I've installed a pair of SEAS T25CF001 in their place until I find a replacement for the original, Wharfedale-sourced, 6 ohm unit. Bass isn't cavernous, but it's full and adequate. I'm running these with a 6V6 tube amp and they aren't very dynamic, so I'm guessing 30-40 watts of tubes would do them just right. Overall, a nice speaker with not much snob appeal, other than a beautiful, Spendor/Harbeth-esque gold name/info badges on the rear. Build quality is above average. I think a lot of people would love the 2060, but it certainly does have it's issues....just like any other speaker. It plays music fairly well and doesn't call attention to itself. Horns get a little strident at times, but this could also be my room or amplifier or the recording. It's hard to say at this stage. Then again, it's hard to adjust to a trumpet or saxophone blaring through a 4" cone after spending the last year with a pair of Quads. That's about all I have to say for now. I don't hate these, but I'm also not in love. I'd consider selling them if anyone wants to try them out, but probably want to hang onto them for a week or two just to make sure.
