RE: "Better" speaker stands sound less good?

Different stands definitely change how speakers sound and I've found that listeners tend to follow taste rather than some semblance of objective judgment, at least in the short run. A very popular designer/builder of stands brought his stands to the Montreal Show several years ago to set them against the stands I use under JMR speakers. The initial reactions (from a reviewer, his young son, and the designer) was that his stands sounded 'better.' They were definitely punchier. But they longer they listened, the more their opinion wavered. My stands were less punchy but clearer in the bass and midrange. I've also tried a popular brand of steel stands (stuffed with lead and sand) under the the same JMR's, and their bass was less punchy than the designer's stands but stronger, more pronounced. A third alternative. Just what we need, right: another variable.
