Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

John Shuster rules.

It would be fun someday to sit down with our favorite speakers to see what we could...see. As I've often said, speakers change what other speakers sound like.

I know how you feel about the Audio Note sound. Both you and I have played with it in various forms. I had the E/SPx HE's here once for a while (external crossovers but no Alnicos at that time). I liked them fine but not a lot better than the E/SPe HE's for considerably fewer bucks. And I still like the K/SPe's in a small room on the new OTO Sig once you settle into what they are about. Their new foam surrounds make them sound more neutral than they did with the rubber ones. They've lost some of their 'character' but have become better speakers.

I'd even like to hear the current generation of Harbeths -- the 7's 30's and 40's I had here for a year or so have all been fussed with -- and set them against the newest Reynauds to see if that major difference is still what it was.

I really don't think, despite what PQ says, that his (or Harbeths or Reynauds) really go after what 'live' music sounds like. They go after what we (or they) WANT it to sound like, at least in our houses. And then they/we say it sounds like music or some such. Silly bears. One of the reasons the Tocaros appeal to the people they appeal to is that they really don't do that. Dangerous idea, I know. And I still like my other speakers doing what they do. But I've come to hear better what the thing they do is. Audio Notes can be lovely. "Not that there's anything wrong with that."

But if you're staying in Hong Kong, I guess we won't be having our party any time soon. That said, Frihed got here once. Time to go back and finish watching his Danish curling team try to catch the American guys. John Shuster rules!
