Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

RE: Ask him about his new favorite. Nt

Two things.

Long break-in on the 40's, which discourages some folks and makes RMAF planning essential: as in Don't take unbroken-in speakers to RMAF! The 42's break in much faster.

The other thing is their difference from most popular speakers listeners are likely to be familiar with. And you start out hearing just the difference; and that's hard to get past in a short listening sessions. My ears were tuned to Audio Notes, Reynauds, Harbeths, Spendors, etc. When I first heard the Tocaro 40's with these other speakers in my ears, they sounded too direct, fast, impolite (!) They didn't try hard enough to please me. After listening them for an extended period of time and then going back to my AN's and JMR's, my speakers sounded too indirect, slow, warm, solicitous. Now, with all three brands in my house, I get what all of them are about. The Tocaros are not too fast and direct; the AN's and JMR's are not too slow and warm. They just have very different takes on music.

Given how different the Tocaros are, those who are curious will definitely need to hear them for a while to begin to hear them right. This said, I've had a couple of people get them on first hearing, which probably had a lot to do with their listening experience. In both cases, these guys listened to a lot of 'live' music. I think that if your primary listening experience is in the living room, Tocaros will sound too 'live.' We think we want that but not all of us do. When we say (I've said it) "naturally warm," we really mean not too real, please!

Also, in my experience, the longer you listen to Tocaros, the less different they sound. You adjust to them just as you do to any good speaker in time. You don't really hear their particular voice until you do a switch. That can be a shock.
