Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

RE: Ask him about his new favorite. Nt

Yeah but so what. They're all good. Taste evolves for many of us, generally toward the more accurate -- provided it truly is. But that's not what everyone wants in his house.

I moved from Harbeth (7's, 30's, 40's) to Reynauds because, as I've said elsewhere, the latter made the former sound too staid for my evolving taste (!). Reyauds are more present and exciting to me and the current versions, with the new technology that better isolates the drivers from the cabinets, image better, something I didn't use to think mattered. Harbeths do some things better but for me just not the essential things. They are English to the core, even less engaging than Audio Notes, far less engaging than classic Spendors. Reynauds, as I've also said many times before, sound like BC1's that grew up right instead of becoming charming SP 1/2's.

Tocaros are more realistic than either, in ways that can become addictive. But again, not everyone will prefer that. Listenig at home is just a different kind of experience from 'live' and many of us want to keep it that way. So I don't push Tocaros on anyone who comes by, but it is fun to demo them and watch the reactions. I do hope they get around more so they can become a larger part of the speaker conversation. An old and wise audio friend of mine said that if you get the front end and electronics right, speakers are just different concert halls. You choose your venue and stay out of chats about truth and accuracy. I mean is Boston's Jordon Hall less accurate than Symphony Hall? In this scheme, Tocaros are Jordan Hall, JMR Orfeos are Symphony Hall. Harbeths are...no clue. Alan Shaw's well furnished living room?
