I'm too lazy to read this whole thread, so I'm writing from personal experience. On JM Reynaud floorstanders, spikes seem to harden the sound when used on a wood floor, so I have always used Symposium Sveltes instead. They were introduced to me by Rob of Applause Audio in Toronto, former JMR importer for Canada.
On the Offrande standmounts, spikes were a clear asset and Sveltes deadened the sound. Moral: you probably have to experiment. My guess is, despite what the manufacturer may tell you, it's a pretty subjective matter.
