I think the little K's succeed because unlike their bigger brothers, they don't aspire to so much verisimilitude and transparency. Like the old KLH Sixes, Advents, and their ilk, they revel in a bit of truly appealing opacity and, for some listeners, come out ahead of the game. Everybody conceded that the KLH Five was more accurate and then bought the Sixes because they loved them. Audio isn't always about high fidelity. I know the purists, who are sometimes me, will scream, if you concede that then "everything is lawful." Well alas, sometimes it is.
