RE: Unconventional

I favor large, full range speakers for all types of music. First, you need low bass to get realistic sound. Speakers without low bass (at least to 35 hertz) always sound small to me. Plus, low bass is necessary if you want emotional involvement. i also think that tubes are essential for correct timbre, three-diminsionality, and dynamics.

My listening room (living/dinning room) is large, but I listen 8-10 feet from speakers. I don't have any room treatments, and I am getting full, rich, detailed sound on all types of music, especially classical. I own the classic Fulton J speakers (flat to under 20 hertz) and the Dunlavy SC-IV speakers (flat to 40 hertz, down 6 dB at 27 Hz). rest of system: AR SP8 and Mystere ca21 preamps, AR D70 amp, VPI Scoutmaster, Benz Ruby 3 cartridge, Fosgate phono amp, and auditorum 23 tranny.

90% of the time I listen to the Fulton J speakers, and their increased low end (compared to the Dunlavy SC-IV) makes the sound huge, when called for as in all-out classic recordings. Fortunately, my wife allows me to position either of these huge speakers wherever I want. Your situation is quite different. Without the option of large speakers, I think RGA's recommendation of something like the Audio Note speakers positioned in corners is the only option to achieve full, detailed sound without harming the beautiful look of your room.
