"Unconventional soundstaging and tonal balance is an acquired taste. A preference."Well yes, I suppose, but if "unconventional" is audibly more natural-sounding than "conventional", then it doesn't take long to get used to it.
Maybe some off-centerline listeners have a "preference" for having the image pulled over and localized at the near speaker, and for the tonal balance to be skewed relative to what they'd hear in the sweet spot. But in five years of showing speakers that don't do that at audio shows, I've never once gotten a negative comment about the off-centerline sound. Quite the contrary in fact.
